What is GHS?

The Gilpatrick History Society is an academic and social organization, whose membership is open to all History majors. Gilpatrick sponsors several events each year, which are offered to History majors and usually extended by invitation to the entire Furman community. Gilpatrick typically sponsors one major trip each year to a historically significant city in South Carolina. Past trips have included visits to Charleston and Abbeville.

Gilpatrick is dedicated to aiding and assisting its members, both while they are attending Furman and also in preparing them for professional life after undergraduate studies. The Winter GHS has sponsored seminars for History majors regarding summer internships, law school and graduate programs. GHS also stresses the importance of student and faculty interaction, hosting holiday parties, dinners, and similar events. GHS also aims to educate the Furman Community about the history of the Upstate and the South as a whole. This goal is pursued by presenting academic and social programs throughout the year.
